What Are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins located in the lower rectum or around the anus, similar to varicose veins. They can develop inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) or under the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids). Hemorrhoids are common in adults over 40, and can cause symptoms like:

  • Pain or discomfort.
  • Itching or irritation around the anal region
  • Swelling or a noticeable lump near the anus
  • Bleeding after bowel movements

Fast & Effective Hemorrhoid Treatment Options

At Hemorrhoid Institute, we specialize in Infrared Coagulation (IRC), a highly effective, minimally invasive treatment for internal hemorrhoids. IRC uses quick bursts of infrared light to shrink hemorrhoid tissue by cutting off its blood supply. This procedure:

  • Is quick and virtually painless, often completed in just a few minutes
  • Requires no anesthesia or downtime, allowing you to return to your normal activities the same day
  • Has a high success rate with lasting results

We also offer other non-surgical treatment options tailored to your specific needs. Our experienced team will work with you to determine the best approach for effective, long-lasting relief.

FAQ

What is hemorrhoid treatment?

Hemorrhoid treatment means in-office procedures that reduce blood flow to swollen veins so they shrink and symptoms go away. We use infrared coagulation, rubber band ligation, and sclerotherapy at our clinics. Most visits are short, and recovery is quick.

Yes. Internal hemorrhoids respond well to infrared coagulation. External hemorrhoids are managed based on symptoms, timing and exam findings. We will explain the best option for your situation.

No. Our hemorrhoid treatments are office-based with no general anesthesia and no hospital stay.

Can I drive myself home after treatment?

In most cases, yes, you can drive yourself home. Since we don’t use sedation, patients usually return to normal activities the same day unless your provider tells you otherwise.

You may feel brief warmth or pressure. The discomfort is usually mild and short-lived. If you need it, we will discuss pain relief options with you before you leave.

Most patients feel relief within a few days after Infrared Coagulation (IRC), and you can usually return to normal activity the same day. Symptoms continue to improve as the treated tissue shrinks—shrinkage is gradual over 1-2 weeks, sometimes longer. Your provider will outline the expected timeline for your case.

Bright red bleeding, a painful or enlarging lump, persistent itching, or a feeling of incomplete emptying are common reasons to schedule an appointment. Heavy bleeding, black stools, fever, or severe pain should be looked at sooner rather than later. Rectal bleeding is not always from hemorrhoids

Some cases are one and done. Others do best with a short series scheduled a few weeks apart. We will review your plan at the visit.

Good habits reduce the chance of hemorrhoids coming back. Drinking enough fluids, walking daily, adding fiber gradually, and limiting straining and toilet time can all help reduce the chances. If symptoms return, earlier treatment means quicker relief.

Our treatments are covered by most major insurance plans. If you have questions about coverage, we will help you figure it out.

Many hemorrhoids improve after delivery. However, we can advise on safe symptom relief. If procedures are needed, we will come up with a plan that fits your stage and health.

If symptoms continue for more than a week, if bleeding is frequent, or if the pain is interfering with your daily life, a quick exam can confirm the cause and match you to an option that will work best.
