Understanding the symptoms of hemorrhoids can help you recognize when to seek treatment. Hemorrhoids can develop internally or externally, leading to a variety of symptoms that range from mild discomfort to significant irritation. Below, we outline the key symptoms to look for.
Rectal Bleeding
One of the most common symptoms of hemorrhoids is bright red or spotting blood during or after a bowel movement. This bleeding is usually painless and may appear on toilet paper, in the toilet bowl, or on the surface of the stool. While rectal bleeding is often a sign of internal hemorrhoids, it can also indicate other conditions, so it’s important to seek medical evaluation if it persists.
Itching and Irritation
Hemorrhoids, particularly external ones, can cause persistent itching and irritation around the anus. This discomfort is often due to mucus secretion and inflammation in the affected area. Scratching can worsen the irritation, so it’s best to avoid excessive contact and seek appropriate treatment.
Swelling Around the Anus
External hemorrhoids may cause noticeable swelling or a lump around the anal opening. This swelling can make it uncomfortable to sit, walk, or engage in daily activities. If the swelling becomes severe or does not go away, medical intervention may be necessary.
Pain and Discomfort
While internal hemorrhoids typically do not cause pain, external hemorrhoids—especially if thrombosed—can be quite painful. Prolapse (Hemorrhoid Pushing Outside the Anus)
In some cases, internal hemorrhoids can prolapse, meaning they extend outside the anus. A prolapsed hemorrhoid may cause discomfort, a feeling of fullness, or difficulty cleaning the area. In mild cases, the hemorrhoid may retract on its own, but more severe cases may require manual repositioning or medical treatment.
Mucus Discharge
Internal hemorrhoids can produce excess mucus, which may leak out and cause irritation. This discharge can create a feeling of dampness and contribute to itching or burning sensations. Keeping the area clean and dry can help, but persistent symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
A Feeling of Incomplete Bowel Movements
Some individuals with hemorrhoids may feel as though they haven’t completely emptied their bowels after a bowel movement. This sensation is often due to swelling or prolapse of internal hemorrhoids, which can create a false sense of fullness or blockage.
Thrombosed Hemorrhoids (Severe Pain and Hard Lump)
A thrombosed hemorrhoid occurs when a blood clot forms inside an external hemorrhoid, leading to intense pain and swelling. The affected area may feel hard and tender to the touch. Thrombosed hemorrhoids can sometimes resolve on their own, but in severe cases, a medical procedure may be needed to relieve the clot and reduce discomfort. It’s important to seek treatment immediately or within 24 hours of symptoms presentation for immediate relief.
